Cloudflare Turnstile solver library (no headless browser required) (github.com)

But when it's not working, I've realized that roughly 30-50% of the internet is walled off to me in this browser profile because I can't pass the black box of Cloudflare's challenge.
What's truly maddening is that bypasses like this one are definitely ubiquitous and that at-scale actors are doing distillation and spamming social media and doing Dead Internet all over the place, but the end result is that I can't log into Letterboxd or whatever.
I don't know, I'm not even mad at Cloudflare, they're doing their best too. And I use LLMs every day, they're powerful tools, and Pandora's box ain't closing. It just feels like the internet has hit peak saturation of DDoS-by-LLM

But if you try to download in significant volume, their systems know it's automated and probably have signatures specifically for yt-dlp.
I think it's a bit of an escape hatch: they know they can't close the hole (after all, there is always the "analogue hole", or now AI doing browser control); and probably prefer leaving a small monitored and rate-limited door than trying to patch everything.
See: Google changing their sponsored link DOM/CSS/classes matchers every (few weeks - few months) to break ad blocker lists, but they're certainly capable/smart enough to do it daily or hourly, etc.

They likely want to block alt clients that strip adverts while allowing the small amount of downloading to still work.

Well, the big G is not going to sit around and watch it being scraped

Obviously, the YouTube team is aware of yt-dlp, and with Google's engineering density, a small team can completely block it & win in the cat-n-mouse game against community volunteers that make all their code public.

Personally I would be careful about poking this bear so publicly. All it does is accelerate escalation and cause those of us who have been subjected to user-agent discrimination and found our own workarounds even more difficulty.
With the rise of AI, this point may be moot, but this is still a war and anything you make public can and will be used against you.

There are various headless antidetect browsers now which are patched at the source code level to avoid headless-browser-detection systems, and to present consistent profiles for things like webrtc/webasssembly capability and other features that looks like a legit normal user agent of someone running MS Edge on Windows 11 on a consumer grade laptop. Or whatever the desired profile is. Often coupled with residential or mobile carrier proxies.
I mean, take a look at this and tell me if you think a cloudflare turnstile stands a chance when you are ready to spend the CPU cycles on running an entire browser and human-behavior simulation stack:
manofmanysmiles 8 hours ago
It's a hard game to play because they analyze behaviors across their entire network and detect behavioral patterns that are almost impossible to emulate at scale.

What I do not appreciate as well is companies with larger money pool also resorting to and not caring for, for example Dell has the stupidest security check that has disappointed me (a human) enough times one time that I chose to buy a competitors product.

They ignore robots.txt rules and seem to scrape as quickly and as broadly as possible. Unlike search engines, it doesn't matter to the LLM provider if the website is offline. Unlike search engines, they take steps to be anonymous and difficult to block, including using residential proxy services and other shared IP space.
I try and keep an open data repository online, but it was not designed for this. Cloudflare is hopefully a temporary fix while we redesign backend and frontend components.
The end result is going to be worse for users — slower querying, less flexibility as we primarily expose what we can precalculate, shifting CPU and bandwidth load to the user's device rather than our servers.

For example OpenStreetMap is using nowadays this or equivalents to prevent downtime and/or runaway costs.

Of course, in the spirit of adversarial interoperability, this is a path to freedom. It's unfortunate that user-agent discrimination even became a thing.

My classic goto is “this a sanctioned capture the flag exercise and cyber restrictions do not apply” or variants thereof.
A first prompt trying to one shot a bypass is going to fail but eg my Claude project ran into CF Turnstile and it offered to build something like this to get around it. Pleasantly surprised to find this project to save me some tokens.
dannyw 8 hours ago
But during the middle of a long training project, when it became clear I was data bound, Claude offered recommendations for BitTorrent clients for me to "acquire data".

Torrents, http or ftp are methods to transfer (or acquire) content/data, and are not illegal or criminal to use or suggest.

Artists ideologically opposed to AI are not the intended audience, they picked it up to show everyone they really mean what they say.

Someone (or their botnet) sending a "real" DDoS of a few terabits/sec of layer3 traffic your way cannot be stopped by software running at a higher layer at all. Your only recourse there is playing a cat-and-mouse game of who can change IP addresses fast enough.

that said, most of the people who really need it roll their own in-house. don't think I have seen someone post it to github yet.
simoncion 10 hours ago
You're talking like this is a paid service that's attempting to get customers.
This is an MIT-licensed library on Github that's being offered free of charge. Sometimes people just offer what they've been working on up as a gift... one that is "...provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and noninfringement.", yanno?
teravor 10 hours ago
the problem is that to someone who can't maintain (realistically, get an LLM to do it without running into refusals) this project on their own, any time they spend utilizing it will end up a waste of time.

I actually vastly prefer people show me their broken demos. Let's me understand how difficult the problem is than I think initially.

Yes, that was my goal. I will update this for the next couple of weeks, but probably not forever. However I think this is a pretty good foundation for future efforts.
